Vancouver is consistently rated one of the most liveable cities in the world.
It has accomplished this by recognizing that liveability is affected by many different aspects life in the community. According to a 2007 report by Mercer Human Resource Consulting for example, Vancouver tied with Vienna as having the third highest quality of living in the world, after Zürich and Geneva. In 2007, Vancouver was ranked the second most expensive in Canada after Toronto, and, in 2006, the 56th most expensive city in which to live among 143 major cities in the world.
With a population of about 600,000 (BC Stats estimate), Vancouver lies in a region of more than 2 million people. Vancouver is the largest city in the province of British Columbia and the third largest in Canada. Vancouver is ethnically diverse, with 52% of city residents having a first language other than English.
